Refined olive oil is made from virgin oil that is not fit to be eaten as it is. It is cleaned with heat, filters and partly chemical processes. Afterwards it is odourless and neutral in taste. Most of the polyphenols are lost along the way.
Refined olive oil is rarely sold on its own. If the label only says “olive oil”, without “virgin” or “extra virgin”, it is usually a blend of refined and virgin oil.
